Tell Your Governor: PJM Needs to be Held Accountable for High Energy Prices and Slowing Down Clean Air Progress

For too long, PJM, the organization that manages energy systems across several states in the East and Midwest, has failed our wallets, our lungs, and our planet. As energy prices continue to rise, PJM has made little progress on connecting hundreds of solar, wind, and battery projects that have waited for years to connect to the grid.

To make matters worse, PJM provides little to no access to public engagement in its decision-making processes. Decisions that affect our energy bills, our access to clean air, and the future of our planet are made behind closed doors.

That is why we’re calling on Governors to tell PJM to clean up its act. While PJM may care little for what ordinary citizens have to say, we have seen them respond to pressure from high-ranking elected officials in the past.

I am writing to ask you to call on PJM to clean up its act. Despite rising energy prices and an increasingly warming climate, PJM has continued to demonstrate a blatant preference for fossil fuel generation to the detriment of our wallets, our lungs, and our planet. Take PJM’s recent “Resource Reliability Initiative” as an example. Under the guise of trying to meet growing energy demand, PJM is fast-tracking the interconnection process for 50 projects of its choosing, many of which include dirty gas plants. Despite their claims that this plan will alleviate increasing energy demands, these 50 projects are not even required to come online until 2031. Meanwhile, 95% of the projects that sit in the interconnection queue are clean energy projects, and many of them have been stuck in the queue for multiple years. Make no mistake: despite claims of neutrality, PJM has a clear fossil fuel-driven agenda, and they have stalled the adoption of hundreds of clean energy projects that would alleviate demand issues and lower prices for ordinary ratepayers. It’s far past time for PJM to clean up its act and get on board with the clean energy transition that they are trying so hard to slow down. I urge you to tell PJM to stop preferring fossil fuels and to start prioritizing clean energy sources that would truly bring down costs for the residents of our state. Thank you
