A RIVER RESTORED
Lecture by Zack Waterman, Director Idaho Chapter Sierra Club
Four dams built along the lower Snake River decimated Idaho’s once abundant salmon and steelhead fisheries. This year we are seeing near record low numbers of salmon and steelhead return home to spawn in Idaho's pristine headwaters. But that great news is that we have a truly historic opportunity to remove these four dams and undertake the largest fisheries restoration project in human history.
Major changes in regional energy markets, combined with reduced need to use the river to transport commodities to market, recent federal court decisions, and successful dam removals elsewhere have set the stage for us to capitalize on this once-in-a-generation opportunity. The Sierra Club has been working for over two decades to return these fisheries to their historic abundance.
